Artists wield creativity to tackle socio-political issues at CineMart 42, where bold storytelling and international collaboration take center stage. With 24 projects, including works by queer filmmakers, the festival embraces fresh narratives and reaffirms the power of collective creativity.

In an era where the world seems to teeter on the brink of chaos, artists are stepping up to the plate, wielding their creativity as both a sword and a shield.

This year’s CineMart, the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s (IFFR) co-production market, is a testament to this defiant spirit.

Under the new leadership of Marten Rabarts, the festival has embraced a bold, unapologetic approach to storytelling that challenges the status quo and speaks to the heart of contemporary socio-political issues.

As the head of IFFR Pro, Rabarts is acutely aware of the precarious state of the world.

“People are conscious the world is on fire,” he declares, acknowledging the urgency that has seeped into the creative consciousness of filmmakers.

The projects selected for CineMart aren’t just artistically impeccable; they aim to make a tangible difference.

This year’s lineup is imbued with narratives that delve into the complexities of authoritarianism, colonialism, and even dystopian futures, reflecting the filmmakers’ anxieties about the world that lies ahead.

Two standout projects, “Cape of Pleasures” by Marcelo Gomes and Cao Guimarães, and Cheryl Dunye’s “Black Is Blue,” exemplify this trend.

Both films, created by queer filmmakers, address the mounting concerns within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in light of the rightward political shift in the United States.

Dunye, a revered figure in the queer community, offers a poignant examination of her community’s plight under the new regime.

But it’s not just about quality; CineMart has also upped the ante in terms of quantity.

With 24 projects selected this year, including an expanded Darkroom work-in-progress section, the festival is back in full throttle, according to Rabarts.

“We are the OG gangster, the OG co-production market,” he proclaims with pride, emphasizing the festival’s pioneering role in the global film scene.

This third consecutive in-person edition marks a significant return to form, embracing new tools and learnings from the pandemic era, while reaffirming the irreplaceable value of face-to-face interactions in building enduring co-production relationships.

Having attended CineMart for over three decades, Rabarts is no stranger to its impact.

The festival has been instrumental in many filmmakers’ careers, acting as a launchpad for distinctive, singularly voiced art films.

However, in a world where the streaming bubble has burst and traditional media faces financial challenges, Rabarts stresses the need for increased collaboration.

“Collectivity is one of the ways forward,” he insists, pointing to Cheryl Dunye’s film, a co-production between the U.S., Germany, and Greece, as a prime example.

As CineMart aims to serve a global community of filmmakers, it remains committed to showcasing fresh, innovative projects.

“Producers know they are getting the first bite of a very fresh apple,” Rabarts quips.

The festival stays true to its identity, offering genre films that are anything but conventional, and comedies that push boundaries.

It’s a promise CineMart intends to keep, even if it means attracting a more niche audience.

In a world where the future is uncertain and the challenges are immense, CineMart stands as a beacon of hope, a place where artists can come together, share their visions, and perhaps, in some small way, contribute to making a difference.

As the 42nd edition of CineMart unfolds from February 2 to 5, one thing is clear: the power of collective creativity is more crucial than ever.
